Tourette’s syndrome is diagnosed when both motor and vocal tics (sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic, stereotyped motor movements or vocalizations) are experienced persistently, although these do not have to occur concurrently. Vocal tics are often accompanied by throat-clearing, and grunting, and in some cases obscene words or phrases.
