William James (1842-1910) was one of the founding fathers of scientific psychology. In 1875 he founded the first American psychological laboratory at Harvard. He also wrote Principles of Psychology, considered to be the first textbook of psychology. He was the first internationally recognized philosopher to promote American pragmatism, and his views provided a foundation for behaviourism as well as Gestalt psychology.
