Mnemonics, or mnemonic strategies, are a wide range of techniques in which information is organized in specific ways in order to be easier to retrieve from memory. Acronyms are an example of a type of mnemonic, where the first letters of a group of words are organized into a meaningful structure. Other mnemonics include visualization strategies (e.g. see: Method of Loci) and peg-word systems, where terms are linked together and their relationships to each other are memorized.
The term mnemonic is named after Mnemosyne, the Greek goddess of memory.
