Learned helplessness is a phenomenon discovered by Martin E.P. Seligman when studying classical conditioning in dogs. Seligman found that when dogs were repeatedly subjected to an aversive stimulus from which they could not escape, they would eventually stop trying to avoid the stimulus, even if presented with a way of escaping.
