Heinz Kohut (1913-1981) was an American psychoanalyst of Austrian origin, and the founder of ‘self psychology’. Kohut, like many other Jewish academics, was forced to leave Austria after the German annexation in 1938. He found a new home in Chicago, where he became a prominent member of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.
