Conformity is the act of an individual shaping his or her actions in accordance with other members of a group. Research carried out by Muzafer Sherif, as well as by Solomon Asch, has identified factors that tend to increase the degree of conformity.
These factors are:
– ambiguity regarding the correct interpretation of an event.
– size of majority (unanimity being a particularly strong factor).
– the status of the individual within the group.
