In Jungian psychology, an archetype is a hypothesized universal symbolic representation in the mind, of which there are many types. Thes include anima, animus, the mother and father, the hero, and the shadow-self. According to Jung, archetypes can become manifest in literature, mythology, fairy tales and dreams.
