Absolute threshold is a psychophysics term, which refers to the lowest intensity of a stimulus that a person can detect 50 percent of the time. The absolute threshold was taken into use in experiments in classical psychophysics, in order to determine a somewhat reliable standard for measuring the detectability of stimuli by research subjects. The need for such a standard was based upon the fact that detectability by subjects would tend to be variable on identical trials.
