Statistical variables can be independent, (manipulated in an experiment) and dependent, (depending on the effect of the independent variable). Variables can be categorical or continuous; categorical variables can have limited values, such as level of education or marital status, while continuous variables can have infinite values, such as in the case of reaction times or height.
